How wonderful (in the true sense of the word) was it to be immersed for four hours in a world that evokes the literature, cinema and media of the 20th century’s avant-garde and to be guided through this world by a captivating narrative. If this sounds a bit pretentious , then Beckett is just a weird, wonderful and unique game playing experience that has to be experienced by anyone who loves to go somewhere a little dangerous.The ease of interactivity lets you glide through the narrative making it akin to reading a book, while the prose is presented within visual backdrops that allow you to read and digest the meaning of this bleak and thoughtful surreal world that is called BECKETT…… The synthesis of the sound, words, moving images and gameplay combine and gave an immersive experience unlike any other. More please….. Great art game. I loved it. Maybe a bit short but I don't mind that. Shorter is somtimes better. Very moody. If you're into art, experiential, experimental games you'd love this.. The Secret Experiment has created a game that comes in from the left field, has gameplay that reminds me of Myst (remember that!?) Also looks like David Carson had a hand in the graphics. Abstract, dark and seriously different from much of what's around today! Nicely done guys!. Reviewing because I want this game to be better known. I love the aesthetic especially - too often games go for a very literal representation, even when they stray into the bizarre. Beckett's approach of displaying characters as various objects is a clever way of representing them, and giving each character an audio hook instead of a voice adds to their characters more than most professional voice acting could.I can't really add anything that isn't covered in the excellent Rock, Paper, Shotgun review, so just go read that if you want in-depth coverage.. So man, BECKETT is one of the most visually rich, imaginative, *incredibly* well written and super depressing games I've ever played. Parts of it were like a typographic ballet.. Beckett is set in a dystopian world that resonates with touches of Philip K♥♥♥♥♥♥ Jan Svankmejer and Raymond Chandler. It is unlike any game I have played before. Saying that, I have played games that have tried to be like this, but this is a new approach that challenges the pre-conceptions of what make a game great,and truly pulls it off.The game gives itself time to breathe. It doesn't rush, it kicks its heels, shoulders hunched, and unfolds its narrative like an untethered butterfly. This is a gamechanger. And if this is an indicator of a new movement, then it is going to be a very exciting time for gamers.. Beckett is a one-of-a-kind point and click game that has presented the ugliness of the world in the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing way. From the coughs and laughters weaving through the dialogues, to the jarring disruptions in gameplay with text, distortions and photography, Beckett offers the player a chance to reflect on the destruction of their own lives, and find some beauty in them. This is by no means for the average gamer, but if you find yourself alone at night, with a cold wind outside and a cup of tea by your side, immerse yourself in the poetry of Beckett.Recommended reading: "On Ugliness" by Umberto Eco.. This game does exactly what it sets out to do. It's disturbing and filled with highly expressive and minimalist imagery, visual metaphor and some genuinely bizarre insight.This game will make you feel off. Play with headphones.. Feels like an art exhibition than a game. Very unique narrative with interesting characters that makes you question the concept of existance. What makes uo exist? What is it to exist? What defines our personhood? Rather short but longer does not always mean better.. I'm not usually a huge visual novel fan but Beckett really grabbed me. It's a sincerely dark and at times mildly disturbing game but it nails the mood really well. The somewhat 2D nature of a visual novel means they have to dig deep to pull something from the player but by the end of the game I found myself very much identifying with the lead character, even through the trippy and sinister effects the games puts in between the player and Beckett himself. It doesn't overstay its welcome and calling it a visual novel is almost unfair as there's a big of interaction between the PC and the world but at the end of the day, the story it tries to tell is complicated and gripping. The subject matter could come off VERY ham-fisted and over the top but there's a subtle smartness to Beckett that indicates the developer wasn't trying to shock or overdramatize anything to the player, he simply let the strong script do the work and the player can fill in between the lines themselves.
